Dieting has never been my thing. For a long time it was a self-defeatist endeavour. The mere thought of giving up certain foods and going to the gym was a whole lot of effort to get to a weight goal only to revert right back where I started, heavy, and panting for breath on the way to the doughnut shop.
However, when my best friend recommended Keto, I thought I’d give it a try. After some research, I was intrigued by the concept of cutting back on sugars by significantly reducing the amount of carbohydrates I eat. It didn’t take much to convince me to give it a try. Four months later, I’d dropped 10kg and was at a healthy weight. Fast forward 3 years and I’m still off sugar and eating only the amount of carbs I feel my body needs (which, considering the sedentary lifestyle I live, is very little) So… Am I still on Keto…? No… but I suppose technically I am.
That’s the thing with diets – when does a diet stop being a diet and is just your diet? I have a healthy diet that involves eating from every food group but is more skewed towards proteins and healthy fats than carbs. I get a balance of all the vitamins and nutrients I need from mostly natural foods.
So what next? I’m right back to square one, I don’t care much for dieting and I'm more focused on maintaining a healthy lifestyle. I’ve found that my relationship with food has been an important way to practice self-discipline and control.
In all my years living in New York, I indulged in enough salty, sugary, spicy and super-sized meals to last a lifetime. Moving on to life in London and then on to Stockholm, meals are leaner, cleaner and taste just as delicious. I’m not missing out on anything really – but try telling others that. I chuckle when friends and family members shoot me pitying looks across the dinner table when they see my bowl of broccoli, cheese and chicken.
Life without carbs (well technically you can’t really be on 0 carbs) is great! If you’re curious about what this looks and tastes like… keep visiting this page. I love cooking, having fun with food, and creating something out of nothing. So it’s my pleasure to share my food discoveries, creations, and (mis)adventures with you!
Life before Keto was not miserable to be honest. My bestie and I had lots of laughs over chocolate plies, croissants and Jamaican rice and peas 😍🥰😍🤤🤤
Two years later … thankfully life is still good albeit more cauliflower than chocolate … there’s still joy and laughter in my life 🤩
